LEWISTON, Viral Sach (Bureau) : Representative Jared Golden, a moderate Democrat representing a Maine district that has increasingly favored former President Donald Trump, announced on Thursday that he will not seek re-election. The 43-year-old congressman pointed to the rise of political violence and extreme polarization in the United States as the primary reasons for his departure from office.
In an opinion piece for his hometown newspaper, Golden expressed his fatigue with the “increasing incivility and plain nastiness” that have become commonplace in American society. Despite his belief that he could win another term, he stated a dread for the prospect of winning, citing concerns for his and his family’s safety.
Golden’s retirement creates a vulnerable seat for Democrats heading into the next midterm elections, as his district voted for Trump by a nine-point margin in the 2024 election.Golden, a Marine veteran first elected in 2018, has been known to break with his party on significant votes, recently siding with Republicans on a government funding measure. His announcement comes as both major parties engage in contentious redistricting battles across the nation.
The news of Golden’s retirement was met with celebration from Republicans, who see an opportunity to flip the seat. “Serial flip-flopper Jared Golden’s exit from Congress says it all,” said Maureen O’Toole, a spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee. Former Republican Governor Paul LePage is among those running for the seat. Golden unseated Republican incumbent Bruce Poliquin in 2018.
Golden expressed his hope that his departure will pave the way for competitive races on both sides of the aisle and for a new generation of leaders to step forward. “The torch should be passed to those with the greatest stake in the future,” he wrote.
