Dhaka, Viral Sach (Bureau) : Nahid Islam, a key leader of the Bangladesh student uprising, has expressed profound dissatisfaction with the five-year prison sentence given to former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, deeming it insufficient for his role in crimes against humanity.
While hailing the death penalty handed down to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 for the same charges, Islam criticized the verdict for the former police chief. Islam, who served as a former information advisor to the interim government, has since launched the National Citizen Party (NCP) to formally enter national politics.
During a press conference late Monday evening, Islam celebrated the tribunal’s decision against Hasina, calling it a “historic verdict.” He urged the interim government to extradite Hasina to Bangladesh and carry out her death sentence within one month.
“If this does not happen, the hopes of the people, the families of the martyrs, and the injured fighters will remain unfulfilled,” he stated.
Recalling the personal toll of the July-August revolution, Islam said, “The day my brother Abu Sayeed was killed, we vowed to secure justice for his murder. Today, we have received a verdict for the atrocities committed against thousands of martyrs and injured fighters.” He argued that Hasina was the “supreme commander and planner of the genocide,” holding her accountable not only as an individual but also as a party leader and prime minister.
Consequently, he announced that an appeal would be filed to prosecute the Awami League party for crimes against humanity.Regarding the former IGP’s sentence, Islam was unequivocal. “He was accused of the same crimes. We are not satisfied with his five-year sentence,” he declared.
He added that despite being a government witness, Mamun’s punishment should have been more severe and confirmed that the verdict would be challenged in the appellate division.
